The History and Mission of the Virginia Hurricanes

The Virginia Hurricanes Girls Basketball Club is a non-profit basketball organization devoted to helping young female athletes achieve their full basketball potential in a comfortable, supportive, and safe environment.  The Hurricanes are committed to providing girls superior instruction, solid fundamental skills, and high-level competition, while developing the character traits of confidence, self-esteem, teamwork, leadership, and accountability on and off the court.

Michael Rivera founded the Hurricanes in 2008 after spending several years within large AAU girls basketball programs as both a parent and a coach.  Michael started the Hurricanes to offer families an alternative basketball program that:

o       Focuses on improving each player’s core fundamental basketball skills;

o       Provides year-round opportunities for players wanting to devote extra time outside the regular spring AAU season to develop their skills;

o       Emphasizes and pursues the interests and goals of the players – and in particular does not place the interests of the club or its management over that of the players; and

o       Is affordable to families and never denies a player the opportunity to participate due to financial constraints.

Michael also envisioned creating a basketball program that promotes a “family” environment — meaning that families throughout the program know each other and feel they are part of a community striving towards a common goal of providing a positive experience for their daughters.  To foster such a family environment, Michael committed to limiting the size of the program and the number of teams.  The Hurricanes focus on the quality, not quantity, of its players and teams.

The Hurricanes program has remained true to the vision and goals of its founder.  These features are what distinguish the Hurricanes from other programs and make the Hurricanes unique and exciting.

Our coaches stress the importance of fundamentals, team basketball, and having fun. Team practices are pre-planned, disciplined, and organized, with a focus on skills work.  We supplement our team practices with outside trainers and guest coaches.  The Hurricanes strive to prepare girls to play and succeed at the middle school and high school levels and beyond.

In 2011, we completed our 4th successful AAU season.  We fielded four teams during the Spring 2011 AAU season — a 6th grade team, a 5th grade team, a 4th grade team and a combined 3rd and 4th grade developmental team.  Our teams recently participated in a local AAU 2011 summer league.  We will offer teams that will compete in an AAU Fall league from September to November 2011.
